Health Tip #1-Avoid Drinking Excessively
Recent studies have shown that one to two glasses of red wine a day could help protect against heart disease, lower the risk of diabetes, and increase blood flow. However, drinking in excess not only ruins a beautiful complexion, it can also result in cirrhosis in the liver, pancreatitus, and even cancer. Moderation is key!
Health Tip #2-Quit Smoking
Every year, more than 400,000 deaths in the United States are caused from smoking-related illnesses. Since 1960, the year the Surgeon General announced smoking is detrimental to health; Americans have been trying to cut back or quit smoking. However, in reality, not enough people are actually quitting. The smoker isn’t the only one affected by their habit; others who inhale the smoke are also exposed. Secondhand smoke from parents, friends and strangers increases the chance for middle ear problems, can cause coughing and wheezing, and can worsen asthma conditions. To quit smoking means greatly reducing your risk of lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, and other respiratory illnesses. For many smokers, quitting is the ultimate challenge, though there are a few things you can do to make your transition to a smoke-free life easier! For instance, have a friend quit smoking with you. Set a date for when you intend to quit, and help each other stay in line. Try thinking of something else when you want a cigarette; focus on a crossword puzzle, or go on a hot date! Try putting gum or a sucker in your mouth in place of a cigarette. Buy only one pack at a time and switch to a brand you don’t like. Get rid of all your cigarettes and hide your ashtrays, to keep from thinking about smoking. Change your everyday routine and stay busy; visit places, take up hobbies, work-out. Start a money jar with the money you save by not spending on cigarettes (wow, does it ad up!). When you quit, not only will you feel healthier, you’ll look and be healthier!
Health Tip #3-Secrets about Acai!
Considered a ‘superfruit’, the Acai berry is considered to have one of the best nutritional values of any fruit on earth! Acai is a fruit that grows deep within the Amazon rainforest, located in Brazil. It is known to increase energy levels, promote healthy sleep, fortify the immune system, promote healthier skin, encourage weight loss, and boost your memory -- and much more! Adding Acai to your diet is a step toward a healthy, happy you!
Health Tip #4-Reverse Hair Loss
Losing hair can be humiliating and frightening. Biotin, combined with other vitamins and minerals to aid in hair regrowth, is a product used to stimulate hair production. A natural, at home alternative is a blended drink with bananas, yogurt, honey, and low fat milk. This drink is rich in biotin which can help keep your crowning glory firmly rooted. Promote blood circulation to the hair cuticles by daily massages of the scalp. Eliminating stress and get enough sleep could also help with this problem.
Health Tip #5-Good Oral Hygiene for Overall Health
Getting regular check ups with your dentist is essential for oral health. Bacteria that form in an unhealthy mouth can travel to the blood stream, carrying illness to other parts of the body. Brush teeth twice a day, and don’t forget to floss! A dietary approach is also an important factor in dental health. Bacteria feed off of sugars and carbohydrates (which break down into sugars) in the mouth. These sugars are found in overly processed foods, white flour, white and brown sugars, all artificial sweeteners, tobacco, soft drinks, pasteurized milk and margarines; to name a few. Eat foods with natural Probiotics, such as: pickled vegetables, sauerkraut, natto. Ultimately, oral care can determine overall bodily health.
Health Tip #6-Drink Ice Water
Drinking water keeps your body and cells hydrated. It also helps you burn calories! Your body raises your metabolism when you drink something cold to keep your body temperature from dropping. You can burn up to 200 calories a day from the suggested amount of 8 16oz. glasses of water a day.
Health Tip #7-Keep Track of What you Eat
If you have any unexplained health symptoms, they may be linked to what you eat. Doctors will often ask you to keep a log of what you eat over a three day period to try to gain insight into what may be causing your symptoms. Include spices and condiments such as pepper and mustard. The most common culprits are dairy products, wheat, corn, yeast, sugar and artificial colors. Eliminate a suspected problem food from your diet for up to seven days to see if the symptoms improve when avoiding the food. Your doctor can then determine if you have intolerance.
Health Tip #8-Sleep Tight
People who change their sleeping positions from their backs to their stomachs experience significant drops in blood pressure, as high as 15 points systolic in some instances. Researchers theorize that sleep position is an under recognized risk factor for nighttime cardiovascular events such as heart attacks.
Health Tip #9-The Best Tea for a Sore Throat
A sore throat occurs when the mucous membranes of your throat become inflamed and irritated. One natural anti-inflammatory, marshmallow root, is particularly effective in soothing sore throat pain. Also, peppermint reduces fever by helping you sweat, and ginger alleviates chills, nausea, and aching muscles. Use one teaspoon of dried ginger root or dried peppermint leaves per cup of water and let it steep for a few minutes.
Health Tip #10-Your Annual Check-up
Though most seem to value their annual check-up—listening to the heart and lungs, ECG, routine blood tests, urinalysis–is not very useful for those who feel ‘fine’ and experience no symptoms. Those tests are not very likely to find something amiss if your body fails to show symptoms. Cholesterol measurement, Pap smears and breast and colon cancer screening (if the patient is over 50), however, are proven useful. Studies have confirmed that skipping your physical often means missing out on some worth-while preventative medicine—such as vaccinations, and a breast exam.
Above all, you will find the most valuable aspect of preventative medicine to be in speaking with your doctor. A doctor’s advice against habits such as smoking, over-eating and how to reduce stress can be the most powerful preventative measure. Getting to know your doctor will best enable them to help you; they will know you, your lifestyle and habits, and, as a result, will have a better idea the cause of symptom if one should arise.
